Authors: Muibi, T. G.
Issue Date: Jul-2019
Abstract: The low level and accessibility challenges of skills development in many literacy centres called for urgent attention in the face of the technological advancement of the 21st century. The lack of sufficient resources to embark on various developmental programmes towards tackling the challenges of new technologies has hampered the skills development ideas. Therefore, there is need to work on various ways of enhancing literacy and skills development through the collaboration of the State Agency for Mass Education and Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education with the existing National Open University of Nigeria and other dual mode distance learning institutions in the country in order to provide adequate assistance in the advancement of skills development in Nigeria. The paper, therefore, examines the new constructs on literacy and its values, concept of skills and competency development, concept of ICTs and its importance to national economic development. The paper concludes with recommendations on some strategic ways of achieving skills development and sustainable development in Nigeria as obtainable in some advanced countries.
